Controversial rapper Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has made a shocking revelation about his frequent run-ins with law enforcement, stating that he has been arrested a total of 19 times and detained on five separate occasions.
Speed Darlington’s legal troubles have been a recurring theme in his public life. In recent months, he faced two high-profile arrests in October and November 2024, which followed his mockery of Burna Boy’s relationship with embattled American music mogul Sean Combs, also known as Diddy. These incidents further cemented his reputation as one of the most controversial figures in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
The ‘Bangdadadang’ hitmaker took to Instagram recently to brag about his multiple arrests in a freestyle video, just weeks after regaining his freedom. In the video, he rapped about his experiences with law enforcement and how his time in detention at the Kuje Correctional Facility had shaped his outlook on life.
“Five lockups, 19 arrests, I get game but I no dey hear. When you hear this one, na Kuje. If you mature, I move on, shame on you,” he rapped, seemingly unfazed by his history with the authorities.
It is important to note that Speed Darlington was detained at the Kuje Correctional Facility and remained in custody until his release on January 21, 2025. His freedom came weeks after he was granted bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja, but he was unable to secure his release immediately due to legal and procedural hurdles.
Shortly after regaining his freedom, the rapper made yet another startling claim. He alleged that he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt while returning from a night out at a club in Lagos. His claim sent shockwaves through social media, stirring controversy and fueling speculation about the incident.
The controversy surrounding Speed Darlington took another twist when his lawyer, Stan Alieke, announced that he and his law firm had severed ties with the rapper. The decision was reportedly influenced by the rapper’s repeated legal troubles and unpredictable behavior, which had made representation difficult for his legal team.
Reacting to the development, Speed Darlington maintained his usual defiant stance, stating that Alieke was free to leave if he was no longer interested in supporting him. He seemed unfazed by the loss of legal representation and insisted that he would continue to push forward, regardless of the setbacks.
