Aces star A’ja Wilson becomes first player to record 1000 points in single WNBA season

Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson further etched her name in WNBA history on Sunday as she became the first player to score 1000 points in a single season in league history.

The 28-year-old, who recently broke the single-season scoring record formerly held by Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd, achieved the milestone in front of her home fans inside the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

Wilson entered the game needing 29 points to reach a thousand points for the season, and the two-time Olympic gold medallist accomplished the feat with her trademark mid-range jumper with a minute and 57 seconds remaining on the clock during the Aces’ 84-71 win over the Connecticut Sun.

The two-time WNBA champion finished with 29 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks in 35 minutes of action and was honoured by her franchise with joyous cheers from her teammates and home fans.

The Aces (25-13) remain fourth in the WNBA standings, and they will be hoping to overtake Connecticut with two games to go until the end of the regular season.

If Becky Hammon’s side wins their last two games and the Sun loses theirs, then they become the third seed.

The Aces will be in action next Tuesday night when they head to the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle to take on the Storm (24-14).
