Beyoncé wins legal fight to trademark her daughter’s name

American singer Beyonce, has emerged victorious in a long-standing legal battle to trademark her daughter’s name, Blue Ivy. This significant milestone was confirmed on December 31 by The Trademark Official Gazette, which granted the global superstar exclusive rights to the name after a lengthy and intense 12-year legal struggle.

 The journey began in 2012 when Beyoncé and Jay-Z filed for the trademark just after the birth of their daughter, Blue Ivy, to prevent others from profiting from her name. The couple’s decision came after they recognized the potential value of their daughter’s name in the public domain and wanted to safeguard it from misuse.
 The legal proceedings were not without challenges. One notable obstacle came from wedding planner Veronica Morales, who had been operating a business named “Blue Ivy Events” since 2009. Morales argued that granting the trademark to the celebrity couple would infringe upon her business, but the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled in 2020 that the names were distinct enough to allow Beyoncé and Jay-Z to secure the trademark. Morales’ objections were dismissed at that time, allowing the case to move forward.

In 2023, Beyoncé and her team renewed the trademark application. However, another hurdle arose when a Wisconsin boutique claimed ownership of the “Blue Ivy” logo. Despite this challenge, the boutique failed to oppose the filing, paving the way for Beyoncé’s legal team to proceed with the final stages of securing the trademark.
