Review
Big Love does not pretend to be anything but a sappy romantic comedy, and it tells the story to near perfection, weaving it around the stigma experienced by single mothers in the Nigerian society. It is a rich movie, told deliciously and goes down like sweet wine, drunk cold after a good meal.
Bimbo Ademoye is the queen of onscreen chemistry: every male actor she has been partnered with, she displays such a bond for, that it is beautiful to see. She was partnered with Timini Egbuson in the Breaded Life and here, both different characters, she eats up her role once again.
The story does not try to be a moral compass. It just presents the situation and leaves you to enjoy the story telling. The product placement is equally done in an excellent way, not over the top, but you know the sponsor of the movie.
I have not seen Seyi Awolowo in a lot of movies to put a judgment on his acting, but he does a good job as the bad boy here, a completely annoying antagonist who is redeemed at the end.
The duo of Jaye Kuti and Shaffy Bello is a complete meal of the quintessential Nigerian aunties and mummies, almost like lifelong frenemies, constantly fighting and making up. It is a beauty to behold and laugh at. Biodun Stephen’s casting skill is top notch. The role of Kalu Ikeagwu wants me to call him Papa too. He plays the role of the quiet, long-suffering patriarch of the family who allows his wife her excesses but knows exactly when to put his foot down.
The conflict resolution in Big Love is one of the best I have seen in a romcom. It is not too long, and not too short; it is just right.
