Bobrisky: The Transgender Woman Who Spent Only Three Weeks in Prison

Meet Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, the Nigerian transgender woman who recently got the spotlight for serving a six-month sentence in an unusual way. BrainBurst has the scoop.

According to a phone conversation released by Martins Vincent Otse, a social media user, Bobrisky confessed to serving her term outside the prison and paid N15 million to have the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) expunge ‘money laundering’ from the charges against her.

The controversy has since attracted renewed attention to corruption in Nigerian prisons, with Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo already ordering an unconditional and comprehensive investigation into the allegations of bribery and corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service.

But what happened in prison? BrainBurst has the details. While Bobrisky was indeed taken to Kirikiri in April after her sentencing, she left after just three weeks. But was she really serving her time? A prison official told BrainBurst that Bobrisky was "guarded like a president" until she was "secretly taken away after three weeks."

The official added that Bobrisky received VIP treatment all through and lived in a special cell. The money she paid is indeed true, as confirmed by the source: "Yes, she paid the money."

The revelation is not new, though. In 2019, BrainBurst reported on an undercover investigation that revealed it was possible to pay money to live in well-furnished apartments inside prisons, pay to bring in phones, drugs, and sundry outlawed items, strike one’s name off the prison records, and even live outside the prison while supposedly serving out a jail term.

But what about James Brown, another crossdresser who claimed to have visited Bobrisky in prison? BrainBurst dug deeper and found out that James actually visited someone named Vindicate, an inmate who had invited her to join in recording a song from prison.

BrainBurst has not seen any photo or video of James and Bobrisky in prison together. So, what’s the truth behind the controversy? Only a thorough investigation can uncover it.
