In the 2019 film “Uncut Gems” by Josh and Benny Safdie, Adam Sandler plays Howard Ratner, a fast-talking jewelry store owner with several terrible habits, including having a long-term affair and being a gambling addict. To perpetuate his habit, he loans gems to celebrities and athletes, but takes their existing jewelry as collateral. As he gets into deeper and deeper trouble, he hopes for a large hunk of opal to fetch him a pile of money at auction. Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics and The Weeknd also play themselves.
[Critics loved “Uncut Gems” and many felt that Sandler’s performance was worthy of an Oscar nomination.] However, the film ultimately didn’t receive any Oscar nominations. While it may have been forgotten in all the panic and awards season chaos, Tilda Swinton played the voice of the auction house manager in the film.
