How do the cast members, especially those sharing the screen with Costner, feel about it? Luke Grimes, who portrays Kayce Dutton on the show, seems remarkably relaxed about Costner’s decision to leave. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year, Grimes sympathetically acknowledged the factors that influenced Costner’s departure. However, he also maintained the philosophy of life that “At a certain point, you gotta do what you gotta do; you gotta do what you love.”
The passion project that sucked Costner away from “Yellowstone” is “Horizon: An American Saga,” a four-part epic he directed and starred in. Regrettably, “Chapter 1” of this endeavour flopped spectacularly at the box office. It wasn’t just moviegoers who didn’t connect with it, critics were decidedly harsh. Warner Bros had to cancel the release of “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2.” Despite the shaky start, Grimes believes that the ending of “Yellowstone” is going to work well for everyone involved.
“Yellowstone” is currently on streaming platform, Peacock or alternatively, you can purchase “Yellowstone” Season 5 Part 1 on Blu-ray or DVD on Amazon. The second part of season 5, which was held back for more than a year due to last year’s Hollywood strikes and Costner’s departure, is expected to roll out on the Paramount Network in November. Keep your eyes locked on Paramount Network; there are talks about Season 6 featuring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, but they’ll certainly be without Costner. Taylor Sheridan, who created “Yellowstone”, already has multiple spin-offs underway, like a second season of “1923” and a new series called “The Madison”. So regardless of the way the “Yellowstone” cast feels about it all, this Western drama-series and its spin-offs are moving forward without Costner.
