Townsend highlights difference in Liverpool style of play under Slot and Klopp

Former Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend has compared Liverpool’s style of play under Arne Slot to former manager Jurgen Klopp, describing the current boss’ approach as “calmer”, Afrosport reports.

The Reds have started the season in fine fashion, sitting at the top of the Premier League standings.

The six-time Champions League winners have managed 21 points in eight games and have won 11 games and lost one game in all completions this term.

Townsend owes this to a calmer approach from Slot as against the more aggressive attacking approach under Klopp.

“They look like they are a lot calmer, they aren’t just gung-ho when they lose it and press all-out attack to win it back. They seem to have a more calm approach,” Townsend said on the BBC Football Daily podcast.

Townsend also highlighted how the Liverpool players are quickly understanding the new system under Slot which has resulted in them retaining the standards that Klopp left them with.

“It seems to be very different to the way [Jurgen] Klopp shaped his Liverpool side over this last four or five years,” he added.

“It’s a major change but the players seem to be adapting well to it, they seem to be taking to it and results haven’t dropped off which is probably a surprise to everyone.

“When you have a successful manager like Klopp walk away, you normally expect a dip in standards and form but that hasn’t happened so far.”

Slot will face a big test when Liverpool travel to London to take on Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.
