As we continue to celebrate the significance of women in the film industry, BrainBurst had the privilege of being part of the Women in Film and TV Conference, held in Lagos recently. The event brought together several industry professionals, including President of the Forum of Women in Film and TV, Nigeria, Silva, who emphasized the importance of a safe and conducive environment for women to thrive in the industry.
According to Silva, “The importance of women in the film industry is paramount to shaping our nation, so, we need a safe and conducive environment to thrive.” She also stressed the need to eradicate all forms of sexual harassment in the industry, stating that it “kills the nation in so many ways that you cannot imagine.”
Additionally, Silva called for an end to negative stereotypes in films, urging for more realistic portrayals of women and their roles in society. She also emphasized the need for more women in government to create policies that support the industry and its practitioners.
Co-founder of The African Women’s Development Fund, Bisi Adeleye-Fayemi, encouraged attendees to see challenges as opportunities for growth and progress. She also highlighted the need for women to be given the right platform to showcase their talents in all forms of entertainment.
Other industry professionals, including Beatrice Eyong, Director of UN Women’s Country, emphasized the importance of supporting women in decision-making positions in the industry and creating a framework for guidelines to ensure everyone’s participation and success.
The event featured panel discussions on building a sustainable network, setting infrastructure, and technology in the country. It was an insightful and thought-provoking experience that left a lasting impact on all attendees.
