Oloture: The Journey (2024 movie on Netflix) drops the ball

Synopsis: Òlòtūré follows the journey of a brave young journalist as she goes undercover, crossing the challenging terrains of Benin, Niger, and Libya. Her quest to find a way out leads her to the Mediterranean, showcasing her determination and courage in the face of perilous circumstances.

Review

As I watched Oloture, the Journey, I kept wondering what is wrong. Then I realized that the story has been dumbed down, and it does not need to be the three parts, it could have been a one and half hour movie. Oloture is supposed to be an intelligent and clever journalist, smart enough to go under cover, but her decisions and story arc in this second instalment truly belies this intelligence.  The movie is ended in a cliff hanger that leaves one asking too many questions, and not great ones, either.

Sharon Ooja is a great actor, but her acting in this movie leaves a lot to be desired. For someone who is supposed to be an undercover journalist, she acts like a clueless and naïve girl. One part I do not understand is how she has kept her cover all the way from Nigeria and met one person in one day and decided to blow her cover with him, and then follows him, in a strange land. This story arc does not fit in with the plot.

The cinematography is great, and the locations match the story timeline, but the continuity leaves quite a bit of loose ends. Yes, the time difference between the first instalment and this is a long time, but that is the job of continuity manager. I watched the first instalment to remind myself of the story, and that is why I can see that even the girls in the bus are different from the ones that were there previously.

This is a story that ends on an unsatisfactory cliff hanger. I don’t think the movie should have been made; this second instalment does not move the story forward in any way.

From the conclusion of Oloture, the Journey, I believe there is going to be a follow-up, Oloture, the Destination, and I think it is not necessary.
