Rangers defeat Ijele to claim President Federation Cup

Rangers International FC, the reigning champions of the Enugu State President Federation Cup, asserted their dominance once again with a commanding 3-0 victory over NNL side Ijele FC in Saturday’s final, as reported.

Under the guidance of Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, Rangers fielded a balanced squad of experienced and young players, showcasing their depth and quality against a spirited Ijele FC side.

Chief Coach Ekeh Ekenedilichukwu opted to rest many of his star players who have been participating in the NPFL, and the matchday squad rose to the opportunity.

Led by captain Ikenna Stephen, Rangers pressed for an early breakthrough, but Ijele’s resilient defense, anchored by Chidiebere Ogbodo, Oputa Nzube, and Anibueze James, held firm in the opening exchanges. 

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 33rd minute when Rangers’ midfield sensation, Daniel Onyia, unleashed a stunning 30-meter strike that left Ijele’s goalkeeper rooted to the spot as the crowd erupted in celebration. 

After the break, Rangers intensified their attacking efforts, bringing on Monday Yakubu for Ogbodo Kelechi. 

Their persistence paid off in the 54th minute when FIFA World Cup star Michael Uchebo doubled the lead, finishing from close range after Effimi Nsi expertly dispossessed a defender in the box and provided the assist. 

Onyia struck again in the 67th minute, this time benefiting from a deflection off a defender that completely wrong-footed Ijele’s goalkeeper, Ojobo Ifebuche. 

Despite several attempts to extend their lead, including a brilliant save by Ijele’s substitute goalkeeper Onyia Ifechukwu in the 77th minute to deny Nnaemeka Onyekwere’s top-corner effort, the match ended 3-0 in Rangers’ favor. 

Reflecting on the victory, Coach Ekenedilichukwu praised his team’s performance, saying, ‘It was a great match, not just because we won but also because of the quality displayed by our opponents. We came prepared to win, and we did. We give all the glory to God. We never panicked when the goals didn’t come early; we worked quietly and effectively, and the results speak for themselves. I believe we have the quality to pursue the national trophy.’ 

Next up, the reigning NPFL champions will face Sunshine Stars FC in a rescheduled Matchday 26 fixture on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
