Kevin Costner didn’t want to look “old” next to Dave Annable, so he made Annable dye his hair on set. The two stars costar in the hit show Yellowstone, where Annable played son Lee Dutton to Kevin Costner’s patriarch John Dutton. Yellowstone is a massive success for Taylor Sheridan, bringing comparisons to the hit series, Succession. In that family drama, a patriarch of a wealthy family faces off against his children when they try to control their inheritance: the Dutton Ranch of Yellowstone. Yellowstone throws the family into chaos and turmoil with the shocking death of John Dutton III. Interestingly, it’s been a series of disruptions that made stars like Dave Annable who might otherwise have missed out because of it. Dave Annable, in real life more salt than pepper, had to hide his natural hair color from costar Kevin Costner: “I asked [to keep my natural hair color] and this one they said yes. I asked on Yellowstone, and God bless Mr. [Kevin] Costner… he was like, ‘No — you’re going to dye it. I don’t want to look that old.’ I was like ‘…okay. Copy that.’,” Dave Annable reflected. It seems like the series values a look that might work against reality: even though the John Dutton (Kevin Costner), is only a few years older than Dave’s character, it wouldn’t be surprising to see his real-life son already be aging. That missed opportunity raises questions about whether it might improve the realism if “Yellowstone” showed aging rather than covering it up with actors like Harrison Ford in old age makeup. It could mean that Costner himself feels the need to keep himself youthful in a series so clearly more about the superficial than reality. As season 5, part 2, kicks off in 2024, only time will tell…
