World number two Aryna Sabalenka, emerged US Open champion for the first time in her career, winning 7-5, 7-5, in a keenly-contested match against American, Jessica Pegula, Afrosport reports.

The Belarusian’s win comes barely a month after defeating Pegula in another two-set final (6-3, 7-5) win at the Cinccinati Open.

Her victory serves as a redemption arc, having lost the 2023 US Open final to another home favourite, Coco Gauf.

Sabalenka becomes the fifth player to win both the Australian Open and the US Open in the same season, and will likely regain the world number one spot when the next WTA Rankings will be released.

In the men’s singles final, world number one, Jannik Sinner will go up against another American hopeful, Taylor Fritz, on Sunday.
