The Disney Channel has canceled “Girl Meets World” after three seasons. Fans have raised hell on social media, prompting the creators to shop the show around to other platforms like Netflix. However, Jacobs wasn’t able to secure a new venue for the show, disappointing fans and leaving the fourth-season future uncertain.
Reports from Friedle and Strong from the 2017 Philadelphia Comic-Con revealed various factors behind the show’s untimely end. The ” Disney’s ’65 and out’ rule”, Disney’s need for products related to their shows, and mismatch between Disney’s demographic ideals and “Girl Meets World’s” target audience made it unsuitable for extension on Disney Channel.
They mentioned how as the characters, growing from childhood to teenage era, began moving away from Disney Channel’s targeted young demographic. For “Boy Meets World”, its crossover attraction among various age groups, ability to navigate more profound topics like class and real life problems, made it stand unique in the Disney family.
There’s a common point between these shows – characters moving into adolescence could talk about heavy topics at “Boy Meets World” whereas at “Girl Meets World”, topics like communism might become complicated for a targeted audience of preteens. Although not targeted exclusively at them, the sequel series expected the “Boy Meets World” alumni could boost popularity among millenials and parents, and to enjoy and share it with their young. However, it didn’t strike right notes on Disney Network and so had to be axed pre-maturely despite it not being a poor financial choice to have it on.
