Nigeria's striker Abubakar Lawal dies
The Ugandan football community is in mourning following the tragic passing of a local league player on Monday, February 24, 2025. 

Six-time Uganda Premier League champions, Vipers SC, have confirmed the death of their striker, Abubakar Lawal. 

News of his passing first surfaced earlier in the day before the club officially confirmed the heartbreaking development.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved player, Abubakar Lawal, who left us this morning.

“His body has been transferred to a medical facility for postmortem examination. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, club fans, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.” A statement from Vipers read

Having joined the Venoms in the summer of 2022, the chapter of the Nigerian international at Kitende has come to a tragic and unexpected end. 

Abubakar Lawal’s last appearance for Vipers came in their 2-0 victory over rivals KCCA FC on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at the MTN Omondi Stadium.
