Real Madrid beat Girona 2-0 to return level on points with Barcelona.

Real Madrid secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Girona, with a goal in each half, to climb back to second place in the LaLiga standings.

With Atletico Madrid and Barcelona both winning the previous day, Los Blancos had no room for error at the Santiago Bernabéu. The evergreen Luka Modric opened the scoring with a stunning strike before Vinícius Júnior sealed the win late on, courtesy of an assist from Kylian Mbappé.

Girona started brightly, as they often do against Real Madrid, with Arnau Martínez forcing Thibaut Courtois into an early save from a tight angle. However, Madrid quickly responded, with Paulo Gazzaniga denying Mbappé moments later. As the game progressed, Madrid’s attacking threat became more evident, with Vinícius heading over the crossbar after a well-worked move.

Despite Girona’s defensive resilience, Madrid continued to press, with Brahim Díaz forcing Gazzaniga into action and Modric firing over. The breakthrough finally came just before halftime when Modric expertly controlled David López’s clearance before rifling a brilliant strike into the top corner.

Gazzaniga remained busy, thwarting Mbappé again, while Krejci made a crucial block to deny Rodrygo’s header. Madrid’s persistence paid off in the 83rd minute when Vinícius combined with Mbappé to prod the ball past Gazzaniga, sealing the win.

With this victory, Real Madrid are now level on points with Barcelona but trail due to goal difference and head-to-head results.
